Idemitsu finances InPlanet, which removes CO₂ by spreading rock dust on Brazilian farms
According to JETRO, Idemitsu Kosan announced on September 17 that, through its US subsidiary, it has financed InPlanet (headquartered in Munich, Germany), which removes CO₂ in Brazil using enhanced rock weathering (ERW). The amount was not disclosed.
- It is one of the first non-recourse project financings in the ERW sector; the funds will expand rock-dust application
- Founded in 2022, InPlanet spreads basalt dust, a quarry by-product, on nearby farmland, where natural weathering captures CO₂ from the air
- About 200,000 tonnes of dust have been applied over more than 20,000 hectares, expanding from São Paulo state to the Center-West
- In December 2025 the company signed a contract with Microsoft to remove more than 28,500 tonnes of CO₂ in 2026–2028
- Partner farms have seen higher productivity and lower fertilizer use
Why it matters
Brazilian agriculture is starting to be seen as a source not only of food but of carbon removal. It is a new kind of Brazil–Japan partnership, linking Japanese decarbonization demand with the scale of Brazilian farming.
